Under Eye Bags, Dark Circles, and Puffiness: What Causes Each and How to Fix Them

Gold hydrogel under eye patch applied for anti-age and depuffing treatment

Most under eye treatments do not work because they are treating the wrong thing. Under eye bags, dark circles, and puffiness each have distinct causes that require different approaches. Here is how to tell them apart and what actually helps each one.

The under eye area is one of the first places skin shows stress, age, and fatigue, and one of the most frequently mistreated areas in skincare. Not because the products do not work, but because the wrong product is being used for the wrong problem.

Under eye bags, dark circles, and puffiness are three distinct conditions with different causes. A caffeine patch addresses puffiness but does nothing for structural pigmentation. A brightening serum addresses discoloration but has no effect on herniated fat. Treating any of them effectively starts with identifying which one you are actually dealing with, because the treatments do not overlap as much as most product marketing suggests.

Here is how to tell them apart, what causes each, and what actually works.

The Three Conditions and How to Tell Them Apart

Under Eye Bags

Under eye bags are a structural issue: a visible bulge or pouching below the eye caused by the herniation of orbital fat. The fat pad that normally cushions the eye socket can shift forward as the ligaments and skin that hold it in place weaken with age. The result is a permanent or semi-permanent puffiness that does not resolve with sleep or hydration.

The key identifier: bags are present regardless of how rested you are. They look the same in the morning as in the afternoon. They do not respond to cold compresses or lying down. They may worsen slightly with fluid retention but the baseline puffiness is structural, not inflammatory.

Dark Circles

Dark circles are the appearance of shadows or pigmentation under the eye, but the cause varies significantly by person and skin tone.

Vascular dark circles appear as bluish, purple, or greenish tones caused by blood vessels showing through the thin, translucent under eye skin. Most visible in lighter skin tones and when tired, because fatigue increases blood pooling in the area.

Pigmentation dark circles appear as brown tones caused by excess melanin in the under eye skin. More common in medium and deeper skin tones. Can be triggered or worsened by sun exposure, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or genetics.

Structural dark circles (sometimes called tear trough shadows) are created by a hollow or depression where the lower eyelid meets the cheek. Not true pigmentation, but a shadow caused by volume loss that deepens with age.

The quick test: press gently on the dark area and pull the skin taut. If the darkness fades with pressure, it is primarily vascular. If it persists, it is pigmentation or structural.

Puffiness

Puffiness is temporary swelling caused by fluid accumulation in the under eye tissue. It is typically worst in the morning after lying horizontal overnight, and improves over the course of the day as gravity and movement drain the accumulated fluid. It responds to cold, caffeine, and lymphatic stimulation in a way that true structural bags do not.

Causes include sleep position, sodium intake, alcohol, allergies, and general inflammation. Unlike bags, puffiness fluctuates day to day and responds directly to both lifestyle and topical intervention.

What Treats Under Eye Bags

For structural bags caused by fat herniation, topical skincare cannot move fat. What it can do is improve the skin quality and firmness of the surrounding area, reducing the contrast between the bulge and the adjacent skin, and address any concurrent puffiness or pigmentation that is amplifying the appearance.

Niacinamide supports ceramide synthesis and improves skin firmness over time. Hyaluronic acid plumps the skin surface, reducing the sunken appearance adjacent to the bag. Gold has mild anti-inflammatory properties and has been used in K-beauty formulations for radiance and microcirculation support in the eye area.

The ARNEUX WINK · Hydrogel Eye Patches in DEFY delivers niacinamide, gold, and hyaluronic acid in a hydrogel format engineered for the under eye contour. The hydrogel material forms a tight occlusive seal against the skin, allowing actives to penetrate more effectively over the 15-minute treatment window than a standard serum or cream applied open to the air. Use two to three times per week. Seven pairs per box. Fragrance free. COSMOS Certified.

For daily maintenance alongside patch treatments, the ARNEUX FOCUS · Retinol Alternative Eye Serum uses bakuchiol, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid as a morning and evening eye treatment. Apply by pressing gently around the orbital bone before moisturizer. Over eight to twelve weeks, consistent use visibly improves skin quality in the under eye area without the irritation risk that makes retinol unsuitable for this thin, reactive skin. COSMOS Certified.

What Treats Dark Circles

Treatment depends entirely on which type you have.

For vascular dark circles: Caffeine constricts blood vessels temporarily, reducing the visibility of pooled blood beneath the thin skin. Vitamin C (sodium ascorbyl phosphate) brightens the skin surface and provides antioxidant protection against UV exposure, which worsens vascular visibility over time. The effect is cumulative: daily use over weeks produces more sustained improvement than a single treatment.

WINK AWAKEN, the caffeine and sodium ascorbyl phosphate variant of the WINK hydrogel patch, is designed specifically for this mechanism. AWAKEN is coming soon. Check the ARNEUX WINK · Hydrogel Eye Patches page for availability.

For a daily vascular approach in the meantime, the ARNEUX LIFT · Caffeine Gel Booster applied gently around the orbital bone each morning delivers the same vasoconstriction mechanism as a serum step. COSMOS Certified.

For pigmentation dark circles: Kojic acid, niacinamide, and vitamin C are the evidence-based brightening actives for melanin-driven under eye pigmentation. These work slowly because melanin reduction requires multiple cell turnover cycles. Eight to twelve weeks of consistent use is the realistic minimum before visible change. For the full brightening protocol, see Kojic Acid for Dark Spots.

For structural dark circles: Topical products do not address volume loss. The shadow is created by the anatomy of the tear trough and is not a pigmentation or vascular problem. Skincare that improves hydration and surface quality can reduce the contrast slightly, but managing expectations here matters more than finding the right product.

What Treats Puffiness

Puffiness responds to three mechanisms: vasoconstriction, lymphatic drainage, and temperature.

Caffeine: Applied topically, caffeine constricts blood vessels and stimulates lymphatic drainage, both of which reduce the volume of fluid visible under the eye. The effect is most pronounced when applied cold and first thing in the morning before fluid has drained naturally with time and gravity.

The ARNEUX LIFT · Caffeine Gel Booster applied around the orbital bone and across the face in the morning delivers this mechanism as a daily serum step. WINK AWAKEN (coming soon) will deliver concentrated caffeine in a 15-minute hydrogel patch format for targeted under eye treatment. COSMOS Certified.

Cold: Temperature alone causes vasoconstriction independent of any active ingredient. Storing eye patches in the refrigerator before use or splashing cold water on the face in the morning amplifies whatever topical treatment follows.

Lymphatic drainage: Gentle massage using light, outward strokes from the inner corner of the eye toward the temples encourages lymphatic fluid to move toward the lymph nodes at the sides of the neck. The key is direction (always outward and downward, never pressing inward) and minimal pressure (lymphatic vessels are superficial and respond to light touch, not deep pressure). Done each morning for two to three minutes, it produces a meaningful reduction in overnight puffiness. For the full technique, see How to De-Puff Your Face.

For fatigue-related dullness: The ARNEUX WINK · Hydrogel Eye Patches in RECOVER is an antioxidant rich anti-fatigue formula with cherimola fruit extract and rooibos leaf. It is designed for skin that looks tired and dull rather than structurally puffy. Fatigue-related under eye dullness is a different presentation from fluid puffiness, and responds to antioxidant and recovery actives rather than caffeine or vasoconstriction. Fragrance free. COSMOS Certified.

How to Choose the Right WINK Formulation

All three WINK variants are 15-minute hydrogel eye patches with seven pairs per box, applied two to three times per week or before events. The choice depends on your primary concern.

WINK DEFY · Anti-Age: Aging, firmness loss, fine lines, and structural changes. Gold, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid.

WINK AWAKEN · Caffeine (coming soon): Puffiness and vascular dark circles. Best used cold and in the morning.

WINK RECOVER · Anti-Fatigue: Tired-looking, dull skin that does not resolve with sleep. Antioxidant-rich with cherimola fruit extract and rooibos.

If you have more than one concern, alternating between DEFY and RECOVER addresses aging and fatigue across the week. Add AWAKEN when available on mornings when puffiness is the priority.

The Under Eye Routine

Daily: Apply FOCUS · Retinol Alternative Eye Serum morning and evening, pressing gently around the orbital bone before moisturizer.

Two to three times per week: Apply the appropriate WINK patch to clean, dry under eye skin. Leave on for 15 minutes. Pat any remaining serum in after removal. Do not rinse.

On mornings when puffiness is the priority: Apply LIFT · Caffeine Gel Booster after cleansing, pressing gently into the under eye area and across the face, before FOCUS and moisturizer. Store WINK patches in the refrigerator for an amplified cold plus caffeine effect.
